Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down

NEW YORK — A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.

At least four other people were injured, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a “tragic situation” and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. … I literally had to fight people off my back.”

Nebraska Police Arrest ‘Butt Bandit’ Vandalism Suspect

Friday, November 21, 2008

VALENTINE — Authorities said they’ve arrested a suspect in the rash of
so-called “Butt Bandit” vandalism cases.

County Attorney Eric Scott said a 35-year-old man was arrested early
Wednesday morning. Formal charges have not yet been filed. Some vandal
had been skipping from one building to another at night, pressing his
naked buttocks, groin or both on windows.

Store owners, church workers and school janitors have had to wash
lotion and petroleum jelly off the windows he selects.

Local residents found some humor in the strange brand of graffiti and
had dubbed the vandal the “Butt Bandit.”

Valentine Police Chief Ben McBride called it “the weirdest case I’ve
ever seen.”

Top 10 toilet horrors: Times readers kick up a stink

November 21, 2008 Bizarre, LMAO No Comments

There’s always been one good outlet when life feels as if it’s going down the drain: write a letter to the The Times. To celebrate World Toilet Day, Ellen Przepasniak has scoured the Archive for ten particularly choice missives from readers who’ve got themselves in a lather about lavatories [click on the links to read the originals].

1. It seems railway lavatories have never been clean. In August 1886, a reader signing himself Viator Infelix shared his noisome experience aboard the Transcontinental Express. The stench of a lavatory in the stagnant August heat can’t have been pleasant, but the language is what makes this letter especially, shall we say, pungent: “The so-called lavatory, a pandemonium of stinks, some six feet square, with water-closet, urinal, and washing apparatus cheek by jowl, was apparently never cleansed; and neither in this one in the Pullman were there any antiseptics to deaden the sickening effluvium.”

Second Life affair ends in divorce

November 18, 2008 Bizarre, Lawsuits, News, Technology No Comments

LONDON, England (CNN) — A British couple who married in a lavish Second Life wedding ceremony are to divorce after one of them had an alleged “affair” in the online world.
Second Life users can interact and form relationships with other players’ avatars.

Amy Taylor, 28, said she had caught husband David Pollard, 40, having sex with an animated woman. The couple, who met in an Internet chatroom in 2003, are now separated.

“I went mad — I was so hurt. I just couldn’t believe what he’d done,” Taylor told the Western Morning News. “It may have started online, but it existed entirely in the real world and it hurts just as much now it is over.”

Second Life allows users to create alter egos known as “avatars” and interact with other players, forming relationships, holding down jobs and trading products and services for a virtual currency convertible into real life dollars. iReport.com: Share your stories from Second Life

Taylor said she had caught Pollard’s avatar having sex with a virtual prostitute: “I looked at the computer screen and could see his character having sex with a female character. It’s cheating as far as I’m concerned.”

The couple’s real-life wedding in 2005 was eclipsed by a fairy tale ceremony held within Second Life.

But Taylor told the Western Morning News she had subsequently hired an online private detective to track his activities: “He never did anything in real life, but I had my suspicions about what he was doing in Second Life.” iReport.com: Anger in a virtual world

Pollard admitted having an online relationship with a “girl in America” but denied wrongdoing. “We weren’t even having cyber sex or anything like that, we were just chatting and hanging out together,” he told the Western Morning News.

Taylor is now in a new relationship with a man she met in the online roleplaying game World of Warcraft.

This is the story of three drugs. Except one is not really a drug at all and is merely an illusion, a nifty construct, an intense belief that it might be a drug, even though, as mentioned, it is very much not. We just think it is. [...]

Rebecca Riley’s doctor on the defense

April 26, 2010

During the past 20 years, the number of people on government disability due to “mental illness” has soared, rising from around 1.25 million people in 1987 to more than four million today. The number of children on the SSI rolls due to severe mental illness has increased more than 35-fold since 1987. Those numbers tell of an “epidemic,” and the book then asks this heretical question: Could our drug-based paradigm of care be fueling that epidemic?

By Evelyn Pringle, TruthOut.org. Posted December 14, 2009.
