Getting Enough Garlic? – Dr. Weil

Q. Getting Enough Garlic?

Why don’t you recommend powdered and chopped onion and garlic? Does the processing cause them to lose nutritional value?

Answer (Published 11/18/2008)

Garlic is powerful natural therapeutic herb in addition to being a strong-flavored seasoning for food. It can help lower cholesterol and high blood pressure and may help prevent heart attacks by reducing blood clotting. What’s more, raw garlic is a potent antibiotic that is especially active against fungal infections. It has immune-stimulating properties as well as antibacterial and antiviral effects. The compound that is principally responsible for garlic’s disease-fighting ability (and pungent smell) is allicin, also found in lesser amounts in onions and other white vegetables. But note that allicin is formed from an inactive precursor compound only after garlic is mashed or chopped and exposed to air for at least a few minutes.

Onions haven’t been studied as well as garlic, but, eaten raw, they may also inhibit clotting, and they appear to have similar immune-enhancing compounds.

While still useful as seasonings, both onion and garlic lose most of their medicinal value, including their cardiovascular benefits and antibiotic properties when they’re cooked or dried. In addition, commercial garlic capsules do not preserve the full activity of the fresh bulb.

You can use garlic as an effective home remedy for colds: when I feel a cold coming on, I chop a few cloves of garlic a day into my food. The idea is to eat raw garlic at the first onset of symptoms. A clove or two a day is recommended for people who suffer from chronic or recurrent infections, frequent yeast infections, or low resistance to colds and flu.

To make raw garlic more palatable, chop it fine, mix it with food, and eat it with a meal – add it last when you’re using it in cooking. Or cut a clove into chunks and swallow them whole like pills. If garlic gives you flatulence, eat less. Chewing some fresh parsley after eating garlic also minimizes the odor.

Second Life affair ends in divorce

November 18, 2008 Bizarre, Lawsuits, News, Technology No Comments

LONDON, England (CNN) — A British couple who married in a lavish Second Life wedding ceremony are to divorce after one of them had an alleged “affair” in the online world.
Second Life users can interact and form relationships with other players’ avatars.

Amy Taylor, 28, said she had caught husband David Pollard, 40, having sex with an animated woman. The couple, who met in an Internet chatroom in 2003, are now separated.

“I went mad — I was so hurt. I just couldn’t believe what he’d done,” Taylor told the Western Morning News. “It may have started online, but it existed entirely in the real world and it hurts just as much now it is over.”

Second Life allows users to create alter egos known as “avatars” and interact with other players, forming relationships, holding down jobs and trading products and services for a virtual currency convertible into real life dollars. iReport.com: Share your stories from Second Life

Taylor said she had caught Pollard’s avatar having sex with a virtual prostitute: “I looked at the computer screen and could see his character having sex with a female character. It’s cheating as far as I’m concerned.”

The couple’s real-life wedding in 2005 was eclipsed by a fairy tale ceremony held within Second Life.

But Taylor told the Western Morning News she had subsequently hired an online private detective to track his activities: “He never did anything in real life, but I had my suspicions about what he was doing in Second Life.” iReport.com: Anger in a virtual world

Pollard admitted having an online relationship with a “girl in America” but denied wrongdoing. “We weren’t even having cyber sex or anything like that, we were just chatting and hanging out together,” he told the Western Morning News.

Taylor is now in a new relationship with a man she met in the online roleplaying game World of Warcraft.

Quit Whining

Hey you bunch of lowlife druggie whiners. I’m here to tell you that you all got what you deserved. After all, YOU did the necessary things to get your parents to put you into Straight, or you wouldn’t have ended up there. So we took some people that didn’t have drug problems, you say? BULLSHIT! Every last one of you scumbags would have ended up DEAD, INSANE or IN JAIL if it hadn’t been for ME, and you DAMN WELL know it. :flame: You claim that we screwed up your families? Tough shit – you must not have worked your programs all the way through, obviously.. Now do yourselves a favor…quit fucking whining about you were “mistreated” and show a little appreciation for what the program did for you. I think you all really need to think about this..

Instead of whining, you all should be thanking Mel Sembler, and the rest of us.
